Our Journey
From a Local Market Stand to Global Exportation
Tomás, who learned the art of sewing from his father in Chichicastenango, met Rosa, a master of back-strap loom weaving from Santa Catarina Palopó. Both coming from indigenous textile families, they combined their deep knowledge of traditional Mayan fabrics.
The couple married and opened a single, humble stand together in the Chichicastenango market, which slowly evolved into a small retail souvenir shop for traveling tourists.
International buyers quickly noticed Tomás’s craftsmanship and Rosa’s eye for color. To fulfill large overseas orders ethically, they partnered with local artisans in their home regions, legally registered as TOPACA, and acquired an official export license
Successfully transitioning from retail to wholesale, the family expanded operations by opening a new hub in Panajachel, Sololá, right by Lake Atitlán.
More than 35 years later, TOPACA remains a proud family business run by Tomás, Rosa and their children. We proudly support over 400 local artisans and export authentic, handmade goods to over 34 countries across six continents.
